Bekia, the Cairo-based waste-management startup, raised $150,000 in seed funding from Orbit Startups in September 2024, taking its total raised to about $580,000 across four rounds. The platform lets individuals and businesses exchange recyclables such as plastic, paper and electronics for goods, services and cash.
Founded in 2017 by Alaa Afifi, Bekia aims to formalise recycling and generate income for Egyptians while diverting waste from landfill. The company said it would use the funding to expand its technology infrastructure and outreach across Egypt.
